Feather Meal

Feather meal, which is made from the poultry industry, is a concentrated source of nitrogen when used in the soil. Levels of nitrogen can be in the 12 range, which is fairly high. So it is important to add this to the soil prior to planting, so that the soil biology has had a chance to work upon this meal ahead of time. When used in this manner, feather meal stimulates microbes, enhancing the decomposition of plant matter which then improves soil structure. Overuse of feather meal can result in plant damage, due to the excessive levels of nitrogen present.
