The Women & Children’s Shelter of Barrie is a registered non-profit charity governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and staffed by trained professionals. All services are free of charge and confidential. Partial funding for our agency comes from the Ministry of Community & Social Services, with the balance generated through fundraising events and private donations.
We maintain a 27-bed shelter location for women who have left abusive relationships with or without their children and an off-site location for women in the community who are seeking support. Agency staff provides counselling, safety planning, women and children’s groups, legal and court support, referrals, and information and education about violence against women.
The Women & Children’s Shelter is committed to providing quality programs and services to women in Simcoe County who are survivors of gender-based abuse and violence.
We recognize the extent of violence against women globally and in our community and advocate for systemic changes that will promote gender-equity and help protect the rights of women and children.
Violence against women is pervasive and cuts across all sectors of society. The effects can be subtle or obvious with consequences that can be far-reaching and inter-generational. Although we assist women who have made the choice to leave abusive relationships, it is through the continued support, awareness, and involvement of the community that lasting changes will occur and violence against women will be eliminated.
